Irrational Seshadri constants from dihedral orbits
Antonio Laface, Luca Ugaglia
arXiv:2609.26521 · Enviado 2026-09-22 · Revisado 2026-09-25
Resumen
We construct an irrational one-point Seshadri constant on the blow-up $X_9$ of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at nine very general points. The divisor $L=9H-3(E_1+\cdots+E_5)-2(E_6+\cdots+E_9)$ is ample and satisfies $\varepsilon(L;x)=2\sqrt{5}$ at a very general point $x\in X_9$. To prove this, we establish that the Seshadri constant of $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1}(1,1)$ at ten very general points is $1/\sqrt{5}$, completing the reflection approach proposed by Dionne and Roth for the ten-point case. We also prove that the same equality holds at a very general free orbit of a fixed dihedral group of order ten. This yields an irrational one-point Seshadri constant on the singular quotient surface. A plane model of its minimal resolution and a deformation of the blow-up centers then give the result on $X_9$.

Semiampleness on Jacobian elliptic surfaces of Kodaira dimension one
Antonio Laface, Sichen Li
arXiv:2609.23306 · Enviado 2026-09-20 · Revisado 2026-09-20
Resumen
Let $π: X\to \mathbb P^1$ be a semistable Jacobian elliptic surface over $\mathbb C$, and set $χ=χ(\mathcal O_X)\ge3$, so that $κ(X)=1$. Assume that the Mordell-Weil group of $π$ is finite and that $π$ has at least one reducible fiber, the reducible fibers being of types $I_{n_1},\cdots, I_{n_s}$. Recently, Laface et al. proved that the zero section and the components of the reducible fibers generate $\overline{\mathrm NE}(X)$ if and only if $$δ(π):=\sum_{i=1}^s\frac{\lfloor n_i^2/4\rfloor}{n_i}\leχ.$$ In particular, the Mori cone is rational polyhedral in this range. They also proved that $N(π)=\sum_{i=1}^s n_i\le 2χ+3$ implies that $X$ is a Mori dream surface. In this paper, we study the existence problem of Mori dream surfaces provided that $N(π)\ge 2χ+4$. Suppose $δ(π)\le χ$. We first show that every nef isotropic divisor on $X$ is semiample, and whenever each $n_i$ is even. Furthermore, when every $n_i$ is even, we obtain criteria for $X$ to be a Mori dream surface: $X$ is a Mori dream surface provided that either (i) all $n_i=2$, or (ii) $N(π)\le 2χ+4$; if some $n_j=4$, then $X$ is a Mori dream surface if and only if $N(π)\le 2χ+4$. However, once some $n_i$ is odd, we construct a Jacobian elliptic surface $π: Y\to\mathbb P^1$ with $δ(π)=χ=3$, trivial Mordell-Weil group, and singular-fiber configuration $I_4+3I_3+23I_1$ for which none of the eight non-vertical isotropic extremal rays is semiample. In particular, $Y$ is not a Mori dream surface.

Fujita freeness for projectivized toric vector bundles
Antonio Laface
arXiv:2608.28438 · Enviado 2026-08-28 · Revisado 2026-08-28
Resumen
Let $X$ be a smooth projective toric variety of dimension $n\geq1$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, let $\mathcal E$ be a toric vector bundle of rank $r\geq2$, and let $π\colon Y=\mathbb P_X(\mathcal E)\to X$ be the projective bundle of one-dimensional quotients. Write an ample line bundle on $Y$ as $A=\mathcal O_Y(a)\otimesπ^*L$, with $a\geq1$. We record a blow-up argument proving that $K_Y+mA$ is globally generated whenever an integer $m$ satisfies $ma\geq r$ and $mδ(A)>n$, where $δ(A)$ is a positive integer obtained from the degrees of $A$ on the invariant quotient sections over the torus-invariant curves of $X$. In particular, $K_Y+mA$ is globally generated for $m\geq n+1$ and $ma\geq r$. Consequently every projectivized toric vector bundle satisfies Fujita's freeness conjecture. The uniform bound is sharp. We also formulate the result as a global-generation theorem for adjoint symmetric powers of $\mathcal E$ and explain its relation with the Seshadri-constant results of Hering--Mustaţă--Payne and Fulger--Murayama. ChatGPT (OpenAI) was used to assist with mathematical discussion, language, and bibliographic searches.

Multiplicity-One Cox Rings of Toric Point Blow-Ups
Antonio Laface, Luca Ugaglia
arXiv:2608.25554 · Enviado 2026-08-26 · Revisado 2026-08-26
Resumen
Let $X$ be a complete toric variety and let $e$ be the identity of its open torus. The Cox ring of ${\rm Bl}_eX$ is described by saturated powers of the toric-point lattice ideal $I_X$. We give a finite criterion for generation in Rees multiplicity one in terms of analytic spreads of projected lattice ideals and zero divisors in the associated graded ring. We apply this criterion first to fake weighted projective spaces, proving that multiplicity-one generation is equivalent to $I_X$ being a complete intersection. For projective toric surfaces, we prove that multiplicity-one generation holds if and only if it holds for every Picard-number-one toric surface dominated by $X$.

Mori dream Jacobian elliptic surfaces of Kodaira dimension one

arXiv:2608.09002 · Enviado 2026-08-10 · Revisado 2026-08-19
Resumen
Let $π\colon X\to\mathbb P^1$ be a Jacobian elliptic surface over $\mathbb C$, and set $χ=χ(\mathcal O_X)\ge3$, so that $κ(X)=1$. Assume that the Mordell--Weil group of $π$ is finite and that $π$ has at least one reducible fiber, the reducible fibers being of types $I_{n_1},\ldots,I_{n_s}$. We prove that the zero section and the components of the reducible fibers generate the closed Mori cone if and only if \[ \sum_{i=1}^s\frac{\lfloor n_i^2/4\rfloor}{n_i}\leχ. \] If $\sum_i n_i\le2χ+3$, then $X$ is a Mori dream surface. The proof combines an explicit description of the facets of the cone generated by the curves visible in the fibration with Artin's criterion applied to the null loci of the dual nef rays. We also show that, in Kodaira dimension one, finiteness of both the Mordell--Weil group and the automorphism group does not mply polyhedrality of the Mori cone. In the polyhedral range, we construct a Jacobian elliptic surface with $(χ,n)=(3,11)$, Picard number $12$, and a big and nef divisor which is not semiample; in particular, this surface is not a Mori dream surface. Finally, for every integer $ρ\ge2$, we construct a Jacobian elliptic surface of Kodaira dimension one and Picard number $ρ$ that is a Mori dream surface.

Remarks on hypersurfaces in $\mathbf{P}^1\times Z$

arXiv:2605.29515 · Enviado 2026-05-28 · Revisado 2026-05-28
Resumen
We study the birational geometry of hypersurfaces in projective varieties of the form $\mathbf{P}^1\times Z$, where $Z$ satisfies mild assumptions. Building on recent results of Herrera--Laface--Ugaglia, we study their Cox rings (when finitely generated) in terms of the Cox ring of $Z$. In particular, we obtain a complete picture when $Z$ is a Fano variety of dimension at least 3, and with class group of rank 1.

arXiv:2605.22184 · Enviado 2026-05-21 · Revisado 2026-05-21
Resumen
We study the Cox rings of smooth anticanonical Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in smooth toric Fano varieties. Using the combinatorics of primitive pairs of the ambient Fano polytope and the description of Cox rings of embedded varieties via localizations, we identify several configurations for which the hypersurface is a Mori dream space and obtain explicit presentations of its Cox ring. We also exhibit combinatorial configurations forcing the birational automorphism group to be infinite, yielding in dimensions three and four a dichotomy between finite generation of the Cox ring and infinite birational automorphism group. Finally, for a class of non-Mori dream examples, we prove the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture for the movable cone.

The Cox ring of an embedded variety

Resumen
We compute the Cox ring of an embedded variety $X \subseteq Z$ within a Mori dream space, under the assumption that the pullback map induces an isomorphism at the level of divisor class groups. We show that the Cox ring of $X$ is the intersection of finitely many localizations of a quotient image of the Cox ring of $Z$. As a consequence, we provide an algorithm that terminates if and only if the Cox ring of $X$ is finitely generated, thereby generalizing previous works on the subject. We apply these results to compute the Cox ring of hypersurfaces in smooth projective toric varieties.

Mori dream singular $K3$ surfaces

arXiv:2412.17036 · Enviado 2024-12-22 · Revisado 2024-12-22
Resumen
We take a first step towards the classification of singular Mori dream $K3$ surfaces. We prove that if the Picard lattice of a singular $K3$ surface is Mori dream, then the surface is Mori dream. Moreover, we show that for singular $K3$ surfaces, of Picard rank two, being Mori dream is equivalent to contain two negative curves intersecting each other, and apply this result to study Mori dreamness of $K3$ surfaces with a singular point of type $A_n$.

Resumen
We provide a characterization of asymptotical speciality of a nef and big divisor $D$ on an algebraic surface in terms of the arithmetic genus of curves in $D^{\perp}$. As a consequence we prove that the SHGH conjecture for linear systems on the blowing-up $X_r^2$ of the projective plane at points in very general position is equivalent to the fact that each nef class of is non-special. Finally we prove that if $r < 2^n$ then any nef divisor of $X_r^n$ is asymptotically non-special.

Effective cone of the blow up of the symmetric product of a curve
Antonio Laface, Luca Ugaglia
arXiv:2210.11829 · Enviado 2022-10-21 · Revisado 2022-10-21
Resumen
Let $C$ be a smooth curve of genus $g \geq 1$ and let $C^{(2)}$ be its second symmetric product. In this note we prove that if $C$ is very general, then the blow-up of $C^{(2)}$ at a very general point has non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone. The strategy is to consider first the case of hyperelliptic curves and then to show that having polyhedral pseudo-effective cone is a closed property for families of surfaces.

José Luis González and Antonio Laface. Finite generation of Cox rings. Notices of the American Mathematical Society. Vol. 69, no. 8 (2022), pp. 1320-1333
Resumen
In this expository note we discuss a class of graded algebras named Cox rings, which are naturally associated to algebraic varieties generalizing the homogeneous coordinate rings of projective spaces. Whenever the Cox ring is finitely generated, the variety admits a quotient presentation by a quasitorus, which resembles the quotient construction of the projective space. We discuss the problem of the finite generation of Cox rings from a geometric perspective and provide examples of both the finitely and non-finitely generated cases.

Resumen
We give a closed formula for the dimension of all linear systems in $\mathbb{P}^n$ with assigned multiplicity at arbitrary collections of points lying on a rational normal curve of degree $n$. In particular we give a purely geometric explanation of the speciality of these linear systems, which is due to the presence of certain subvarieties in the base locus: linear spans of points, secant varieties of the rational normal curve or joins between them.

Decomposition algorithms for tensors and polynomials

Resumen
We give algorithms to compute decompositions of a given polynomial, or more generally mixed tensor, as sum of rank one tensors, and to establish whether such a decomposition is unique. In particular, we present methods to compute the decomposition of a general plane quintic in seven powers, and of a general space cubic in five powers; the two decompositions of a general plane sextic of rank nine, and the five decompositions of a general plane septic. Furthermore, we give Magma implementations of all our algorithms.

Let $\mathbb K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. A curve of $(\mathbb K^*)^2$ arising from a Laurent polynomial in two variables is {\em intrinsic negative} if its tropical compactification has negative self-intersection. Blown-up toric surfaces with non-polyhedral effective cone

arXiv:2009.14298 · Enviado 2020-09-29 · Revisado 2021-10-25
Resumen
We construct examples of projective toric surfaces whose blow-up at a general point has a non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone, both in characteristic $0$ and in every prime characteristic $p$. As a consequence, we prove that the pseudo-effective cone of the Grothendieck-Knudsen moduli space $\overline M_{0,n}$ of stable rational curves is not polyhedral for $n\geq 10$ in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$, for all primes $p$. Many of these toric surfaces are related to a very interesting class of arithmetic threefolds that we call arithmetic elliptic pairs of infinite order. Their analysis in characteristic $p$ relies on tools of arithmetic geometry and Galois representations in the spirit of the Lang-Trotter conjecture, producing toric surfaces whose blow-up at a general point has a non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$, for an infinite set of primes $p$ of positive density.

Resumen
Using the theory of rational elliptic fibrations, we construct and discuss a one parameter family of configurations of $12$ conics and $9$ points in the projective plane that realizes an abstract configuration $(12_6,9_8)$. This is analogous to the famous Hesse configuration of $12$ lines and $9$ points forming an abstract configuration $(12_3,9_4)$. We also show that any Halphen elliptic fibration of index $2$ with four triangular singular fibers arises from such configuration of conics.

Cox rings of K3 surfaces of Picard number three

arXiv:1909.01267 · Enviado 2019-09-03 · Revisado 2019-09-03
Resumen
Let $X$ be a projective K3 surface over $\mathbb C$. We prove that its Cox ring $R(X)$ has a generating set whose degrees are either classes of smooth rational curves, sums of at most three elements of the Hilbert basis of the nef cone, or of the form $2(f+f')$, where $f,f'$ are classes of elliptic fibrations with $f\cdot f'=2$. This result and techniques using Koszul's type exact sequences allow to determine a generating set for the Cox ring of all Mori dream K3 surfaces of Picard number three which is minimal in most cases. A presentation for the Cox ring is given in some special cases with few generators.

On base loci of higher fundamental forms of toric varieties

arXiv:1904.01511 · Enviado 2019-04-02 · Revisado 2020-05-03
Resumen
We study the base locus of the higher fundamental forms of a projective toric variety $X$ at a general point. More precisely we consider the closure $X$ of the image of a map $({\mathbb C}^*)^k\to {\mathbb P}^n$, sending $t$ to the vector of Laurent monomials with exponents $p_0,\dots,p_n\in {\mathbb Z}^k$. We prove that the $m$-th fundamental form of such an $X$ at a general point has non empty base locus if and only if the points $p_i$ lie on a suitable degree-$m$ affine hypersurface. We then restrict to the case in which the points $p_i$ are all the lattice points of a lattice polytope and we give some applications of the above result. In particular we provide a classification for the second fundamental forms on toric surfaces, and we also give some new examples of weighted $3$-dimensional projective spaces whose blowing up at a general point is not Mori dream.

arXiv:1805.10925 · Enviado 2018-05-28 · Revisado 2019-09-12
Resumen
The effective cone of a Mori dream space admits two wall-and-chamber decompositions called Mori chamber and stable base locus decompositions. In general the former is a non trivial refinement of the latter. We investigate, from both the geometrical and the combinatorial viewpoints, the differences between these decompositions. Furthermore, we provide a criterion to establish whether the two decompositions coincide for a Mori dream space of Picard rank two, and we construct an explicit example of a Mori dream space of Picard rank two for which the decompositions are different, showing that our criterion is sharp. Finally, we classify the smooth toric 3-folds of Picard rank three for which the two decompositions are different.

We show that smooth cubic hypersurfaces of dimension $n$ defined over a finite field ${\bf F}_q$ contain a line defined over ${\bf F}_q$ in each of the following cases: - $n=3$ and $q\ge 11$; - $n=4$ and $q\ne 3$; - $n\ge 5$. For a smooth cubic threefold $X$, the variety of lines contained in $X$ is a smooth projective surface $F(X)$ for which the Tate conjecture holds, and we obtain information about the Picard number of $F(X)$ and its 5-dimensional principally polarized Albanese variety $A(F(X))$.

Resumen
Let $C$ be a smooth curve which is complete intersection of a quadric and a degree $k>2$ surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ and let $C^{(2)}$ be its second symmetric power. In this paper we study the finite generation of the extended canonical ring $R(Δ,K) := \bigoplus_{(a,b)\in\mathbb{Z}^2}H^0(C^{(2)},aΔ+bK)$, where $Δ$ is the image of the diagonal and $K$ is the canonical divisor. We first show that $R(Δ,K)$ is finitely generated if and only if the difference of the two $g_k^1$ on $C$ is torsion non-trivial and then show that this holds on an analytically dense locus of the moduli space of such curves.

Resumen
In this note we study linear systems on the blow-up of $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ at $r$ points in very general position. We prove that the fibers of the projections $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n \rightarrow (\mathbb{P}^1)^s, 1\leq s \leq n-1$ can give contribution to the speciality of the linear system. This allows us to give a new definition of expected dimension of a linear system in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ which we call fiber dimension. Finally, we state a conjecture about linear systems on $(\mathbb{P}^1)^3$.

We consider modifications, for example blow ups, of Mori dream spaces and provide algorithms for investigating the effect on the Cox ring, e.g. testing finite generation or computing an explicit presentation in terms of generators and relations. As a first application, we compute the Cox rings of all Gorenstein log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one. Moreover, we show computationally that all smooth rational surfaces of Picard number at most six are Mori dream surfaces and we provide explicit presentations of the Cox ring for those not admitting a torus action. Finally, we provide the Cox rings of projective spaces blown up at a certain special point configurations.

arXiv:1302.4361 · Enviado 2013-02-18 · Revisado 2013-02-18
Resumen
In this paper we determine a minimal set of generators for the Cox rings of extremal rational elliptic surfaces. Moreover, we develop a technique for computing the ideal of relations between them which allows, in all but three cases, to provide a presentation of the Cox ring.

arXiv:1109.0566 · Enviado 2011-09-02 · Revisado 2011-09-02
Resumen
Let X be a hypersurface of a Mori dream space Z. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the Cox ring R(X) of X to be isomorphic to R(Z)/(f), where R(Z) is the Cox ring of Z and f is a defining section for X. We apply our results to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces of toric Fano fourfolds. Our second application is to general degree d hypersurfaces in P^n containing a linear subspace of dimension n-2.

Resumen
In this paper we study smooth projective rational surfaces, defined over an algebraically closed field of any characteristic, with pseudo-effective anticanonical divisor. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition in order for any nef divisor to be semiample. We adopt our criterion to investigate Mori dream surfaces in the complex case.

Resumen
We study Cox rings of K3-surfaces. A first result is that a K3-surface has a finitely generated Cox ring if and only if its effective cone is polyhedral. Moreover, we investigate degrees of generators and relations for Cox rings of K3-surfaces of Picard number two, and explicitly compute the Cox rings of generic K3-surfaces with a non-symplectic involution that have Picard number 2 to 5 or occur as double covers of del Pezzo surfaces.

Resumen
Let X be a smooth projective variety with torsion-free Picard group. We introduce complexes of vector spaces whose homology determines the structure of the minimal free resolution of the Cox ring of X over the polynomial ring and show how the homology of these complexes can be studied by purely geometric methods. As an application of these techniques we give a simple new proof of a characterization of the Cox rings of Del Pezzo surfaces (of degree >1) conjectured by Batyrev and Popov.

arXiv:math/0605108 · Enviado 2006-05-03 · Revisado 2006-05-03
Resumen
Let S be a smooth algebraic surface satisfying the following property: H^i(\oc_S(C))=0 (i=1,2) for any irreducible and reduced curve C of S. The aim of this paper is to provide a characterization of special linear systems on S which are singular along a set of double points in general position. As an application, the dimension of such systems is evaluated in case S is an Abelian, an Enriques, a K3 or an anticanonical rational surface.

Elementary (-1)-curves of P^3

arXiv:math/0605106 · Enviado 2006-05-03 · Revisado 2006-05-03
Resumen
In this note we deal with rational curves in P^3 which are images of a line by means of a finite sequence of cubo-cubic Cremona transformations. We prove that these curves can always be obtained applying to the line a sequence of such transformations increasing at each step the degree of the curve. As a corollary we get a result about curves that can give speciality for linear systems of P^3.

A note on the very ampleness of complete linear systems on blowings-up of P^3
Cindy De Volder, Antonio Laface
arXiv:math/0409526 · Enviado 2004-09-27 · Revisado 2004-09-27
Resumen
In this note we consider the blowing-up X of P^3 along r general points of the anticanonical divisor of a smooth quadric in P^3. Given a complete linear system |L| = |dH - m_1 E_1 -...- m_r E_r| on X, with H the pull-back of a plane in P^3 and E_i the exceptional divisor corresponding to P_i, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the very ampleness (resp. base point freeness and non-speciality) of L. As a corollary we obtain a sufficient condition for the very ampleness of such a complete linear system on the blowing-up of P^3 along r general points.

Resumen
In this note we consider multiples aD, where D is a divisor of the blow-up of P^n along points in general position which appears in the Alexander and Hirschowitz list of Veronese embeddings having defective secant varieties. In particular we show that there is such a D with h^1(X,D) > 0 and h^1(X,2D) = 0.

Degeneration of linear systems through fat points on K3 surfaces
Cindy De Volder, Antonio Laface
arXiv:math/0310219 · Enviado 2003-10-15 · Revisado 2003-10-15
Resumen
In this paper we introduce a technique to degenerate K3 surfaces and linear systems through fat points in general position on K3 surfaces. Using this degeneration we show that on generic K3 surfaces it is enough to prove that linear systems with one fat point are non-special in order to obtain the non-speciality of homogeneous linear systems through n = 4^u9^w fat points in general position. Moreover, we use this degeneration to obtain a result for homogeneous linear systems through n = 4^u9^w fat points in general position on a general quartic surface in P^3.

Resumen
In this paper we prove the equivalence of two conjectures on linear systems through fat points on a generic K3 surface. The first conjecture is exactly as Segre conjecture on the projective plane. Whereas the second characterizes such linear system and can be compared to the Gimigliano-Harbourne-Hirschowitz conjecture.
